Julia Dunn
Julia's has
been a professional artist for most of her life, beginning this career as a
designer of signs. She now specialises in Glass Art. Her love for the medium of glass was set
while working as the designer for a leading stained glass/leadlight business in
Melbourne, Australia, where she learnt many of the techniques she employs today
and glass continues to inspire her artistic direction. She has over 30 years experience in the
design and fabrication of stained glass, leadlight and etched glass work and
also has expertise in oil and gouache painting, graphite drawing and is, for
the most part, a self-taught artist.
Julia is
currently utilising a glass fabrication technique rarely seen in Australia for
glass artworks. Best described as glass collages or glass sculptures, this
process of bonding, rather than just fusing or leading works, enables her to
use and mix all types and textures of glass, as well as a variety of other
objects, which would otherwise be incompatible if worked in a kiln.
Julia has
collaborated on a number of large domestic, commercial and ecclesiastical
commissions and has also had the fortunate opportunity to work closely with
internationally renowned glass artist, the late Klaus Zimmer, on many of his
highly significant commissions, including fabricating his design of ‘The Glass
Tapestry', for The Church of the Sacred Heart, Croydon, Victoria in 2001 - a
3metre x 6 metre (suspended) installation using the bonding technique. This
working relationship and friendship with Klaus facilitated an expansion of her
interest, knowledge and skills in the use of glass as an art medium, rather
than just for a decorative, functional purpose. She has many artworks in private
collections and for a number of years has shown her work in both solo and joint
exhibitions to much acclaim and although rarely submitting work for
competition, as a first time entrant in the 2008 ‘She...' national art
competition, she was selected as a finalist with one of her unique glass
artworks.
Julia coordinated
the 2008 award winning Western Region Arts Network (WRAN Inc) members'
exhibiting event, ‘Peepshow', for their group participation in the Hobsons Bay
City Council art initiative, Art in Public Places, which in itself is an award
winning event - a wee diversion from just creating and designing in her studio.
